Who We Are

We have a vision of the world where people can sustain healthy, happy lives.  Our mission is to develop the energy infrastructure that we see in this vision.

We are doing this by building a huge team of incredibly talented people and using that collective talent to de-risk infrastructure projects.
We are:

Quietly confident: We are like that older relative who knows a lot about a lot. We do not talk that much, but when we do we talk with quiet confidence. We say what we think and why we think it – politely, directly, and with the occasional inclusion of dry humour.

Forward looking: We embrace modern technology and adopt modern ways of working and writing.

Experienced: We are professional, capable, achievers.

Optimistic: We are pushing for change and we inspire people around us to join us on that journey.

Passionate about sustainability: We find healthy balances of economic, social and environmental sustainability. We do what we do because building sustainable infrastructure is a powerful way of improving the world around us.

Our Team

It was 20 years ago when we moved into our home, an 18th century farmhouse and smallholding on the outskirts of Sheffield and the Peak District. It was beautiful but cold and expensive to run. At the time I was working as a part time education consultant and the main daytime carer for our children which gave me the opportunity to re-evaluate our home’s sustainability and energy efficiency.

I upgraded the fabric of the building with floor, wall and roof internal insulation and replaced the oil boiler with ground source heat pumps. We are ‘all electric’ generating our own supply from two wind turbines, a solar PV array and battery storage which also supply the electricity for our Renault Zoe. Grid back-up electricity provides approximately a quarter of our total electricity demand, meanwhile we export around 3 times more electricity than we purchase from the grid.

We have extensive annual and perennial food gardens which supply the majority of our vegetables and fruit. Other areas of the land have been developed into wildlife areas and a woodland with one of the fields used by a local community charity as a tree nursery.

As at home, my work focus is to help the UK develop more resource-efficient and sustainable energy infrastructure that delivers security, affordability and resilience.

Our highly talented Nordic Energy team use their diverse, complementary skills to implement this vision.

As an officer in the Armed Forces I had to rapidly develop infrastructure solutions which was largely free from dependence on the fossil fuel supply chains. I went on to lead large scale multi-national projects and co-founded a leading Energy Demand Side Response company , which is all about using digital technology to optimise existing assets.

That is key, because infrastructure which has already been built will still be here in 30 years’ time. I am passionate about finding novel ways to make existing infrastructure more sustainable and more secure.

I fell in love with Africa and its diversity, the people and vibrance when I was based there. I am really excited about the changes that are coming to the African continent. Africa’s Energy Generation and Distribution infrastructure is about to develop at an incredibly rapid pace feeding a continent with huge potential innovation and talent and I want Nordic Energy to be a part of that change.

I am a geek. I love technology and I love to make things. For example, when my son had to build a rocket for a school project. Well it just so happens that I did a Master’s degree in spacecraft technology and communications. So we built a proper rocket. It didn’t make it to the moon, but it was exciting to see it in action.

I worked on many energy and retrofit projects during my time in local government in Nottingham. This brought me some awards such as the Energy Live Tech Genius Award and the Association for Decentralised Energy Innovation Award.

The retrofit challenge of UK homes and businesses is a difficult one. I am passionate about using artificial intelligence and machine learning to significantly lower the costs and improve the quality of retrofit at a large scale.

I got into energy in the early 2000s when I worked for the Ministry of Defence. One defence scenario was an assault on our centralised energy infrastructure. This was the first work project that I got really excited about and I went on to study sustainable energy, whilst also qualifying in accountancy. So I always had an approach to energy which included economics, environmental sustainability and the security of supply.

I am passionate about all things connected with sustainability. A few years ago I bought some farmland which we are slowly converting into regenerative agriculture practises. And I have worked on quite a few projects now that are merging agriculture, transport, electricity and heat.

Energy underpins everything, and I love to work at this intersection of different industries at a time when our energy landscape is completely transforming.

Work With Us

If you are looking for a job and think that you can add something to our team, please send a CV to hello@nordic.energy along with a letter to explain what you are looking for and how you think we can help each other.

Equally, if your company would like to collaborate with us on projects then send some details about what you can offer to hello@nordic.energy

We are a 100% remote workforce, which means that we can work with the best talent, no matter where you are based.

We believe that a 30 hour work week results in more productive and engaged employees, which ultimately contributes to our success. A shorter working week promotes a healthier work-life balance and allows our employees to have more time for leisure activities. A 30 hour work week gives our employees more time to focus and complete their tasks more efficiently, as well as providing time for personal projects and development.
Disability Confident

We are a registered Disability Confident Employer (registration DCS026595). By being Disability Confident, we will demonstrate an attitude, behaviour and culture that supports positive change towards tackling workforce inequality.
Mental Health

We have made the Mental Health at Work commitment

Diversity

We follow the science and the science tells us that diverse teams perform better. Unfortunately, we are currently heavily weighted towards white men. We welcome approaches from everybody who wants to work with us.
